The Other, Part 4
By Rye Guy

Saturday morning... the day of Zapp's big X-Mas Party... Fry wakes up in her bed but she isn't there. He sits up and hears her in the bathroom. He gets up and gently taps on the door.

"Leela, you okay in there?"

"Just throwing up a lot. Must be some stomach virus or something."

"Sorry to hear that. We don't have to go to the party if you're sick; we can just stay here, I'll take care of you. I make a good chicken soup that should help settle your stomach. We can even rent some movies if you want."

"That's sweet. But the party's not till tonight anyways, so I'm sure I'll be feeling better by then. I don't know about work though."

She throws up again.

"No prob, I'll just call in and tell 'em what's up." Fry goes across the room to the video-phone.

Leela, knelt down by the toilet and still puking, manages to smile. "He's so thoughtful, taking the whole day to be with me while I'm sick," she thinks to herself.

Fry turns on the video-phone and calls Planet Express. Hermes answers.

"Fry?"

"Hey, Hermes. Listen, Leela's real sick and I'm gonna stay take care of her; so we won't be in today."

"What? Now look here-"

Fry hangs up the phone. He turns and sees Leela staggering into the room, he takes her hand. "Here, you should rest." He leads her to the couch.

"Thanks, I just wanna lie down."

Fry sits on the left end of the couch. Leela lays down and rests her head in his lap. He gently strokes her side as she wraps her hands around his leg. She closes her eye and slowly falls sound asleep.

She is running in a black room. She sees Fry in the distance. She's running to him, but the more she runs the further away he gets until he disappears into the darkness. Leela stops and falls to her knees; frightened by being in this black abyss. Her tears drip to the ground. She cries Fry's name for help, but no reply. A bright flash of light gets her by surprise, she looks up ahead and sees a silhouette of Fry. He's screaming in agony. "FRY!" she screams. A cascading array of orange yellow, and blue light floods over the floor. She looks up and sees the same nebula Fry described from in his nightmares. A bright beam of light, like a searchlight, shoots down upon her and a piercing pain like that of thousands of needles stabbing all over her body takes hold of her and she screams.

She just about jumps off the couch, screaming as she wakes up. Fry runs to her side.

"Leela, what's wrong?"

She catches her breathe and wipes a tear form her eye and the drips of sweat form her brow. She throws her arms around him and holds him closely. "You know those nightmares you told me about with that nebula?"

"Yeah, what about them?"

"I just had one. It was horrible, just like you described. I saw you being tortured, I ran but couldn't reach you, I saw that nebula and... " she starts to cry "... it was like Hell."

He holds her protectively. "Shh, shh, it was just a dream. Everything's alright now. I won't let anything happen to you; I promise."

They just sit there in each other's arms for several moments until she calms down..

"You gonna be okay?"

She smiles "I'll be fine. I'm starting to feel alot better too."

"Great! Think you can make it to the party?"

"Yeah, I think so. But it's not till tonight and we don't have to work today." She gets a seductive tone, "Hmm, what can we do to pass the time?" She gives him a naughty look.

Fry smiles. "We could make Shrinky Dinks."

She sighs; her stomach growls loudly. "Maybe some breakfast first."

"No prolemo, I'll fix you some of that soup."

"That sounds good. But I don't think I have anything to make soup with."

"Then I'll just run down to the store and see if I can find something."

"I don't want you to go out of your way."

"It's really no trouble. Besides, I haven't had any good ol' chicken noodle soup in a thousand years anyway."

He slips on his shoes and jacket. "I'll be right back."

"Okay, bye. Be careful."

"I will. Bye."

He walks out the door. Leela looks around the kitchen for a snack to hold her over till he gets back. She remembers that there's about a half gallon of chocolate ice cream in the freezer.

"I'm walkin' on sunshine! OH OH!" Fry sings to himself as he walks down the sidewalk. Suddenly feeling the urge to shout his happiness at the top of his lungs, he jumps up and spins on the base of a street light "And don't it feel good! HEY!" He jumps off and right on top of someone else. The two fall to the ground. Fry quickly gets up and helps the other man to his feet. "Sorry about that, guess I wasn't paying attention."

The other young man, about 18 years old with dark hair he has slicked back, tall with a slight muscular build, dusts himself off.

"It's alright... "

He looks at Fry and freezes "... You... "

"Me?"

The young man snaps out of it and unsurely smiles. "You... y-you were just happy. It, uh, it's understandable," he responds nervously.

"Something wrong?"

"No," he replies hurriedly. "I'd best be on my way." He continues his walk. "Bye, Fry."

"How do you know my... " he turns but the man has gone, "... name?"

A short while later... Fry returns with a brown paper bag full of soup cans. He walks in the door still humming the tune to Walking on Sunshine.

"Hey honey, I got some soup. They didn't have chicken noodle, but I did get-"

He sees her asleep on the couch. He quietly sets the bag on the kitchen counter and walks back over to her. Her face is beaming with her smile. "She looks so peaceful, so beautiful. I'd hate to disturb her." He pulls the quilt over her and gently kisses her on the forehead.

Later that evening, The whole crew is in the Planet Express ship heading for Pluto... Leela is piloting (as usual) in her dark purple silk dress, with elbow length gloves, her hair's in the slightly curly fashion she wears at occasions like this, and ruby red lipstick as well. Fry's in his black tux with a red bow tie and matching vest. "Swanky." he remarks. Everyone else is also wearing formal clothes. Bender has on his magnetic bow tie and his tux with tails. The Professor and Hermes are in tuxedos as well: the Professor with a blue tie the same color as his favorite shirt, and Hermes with a Jamaican green tie with matching vest. Amy has on her favorite gown: pink satin with bright jewels in a circular patter on the skirt, and matching colored gloves that reach up to her elbows. And lastly, Zoiberg in a tattered suit he found in the dumpster.

Their ship enters the Pluto atmosphere and the on board computer locates the beacon from the landing pad. Leela lands the ship on the pad and Zap is there to greet them, or at least her. Kiff is right behind him. Both are wearing their white velour uniforms with their medals adorned upon their chests.

The ramp descends from the bottom of the ship. Amy is the first to run out, she runs to Kiff and grabs him by the arm. Next the Professor, Bender, and Hermes exit. The Professor and Hermes salute Zapp. He salutes them back with his usual sleek grin. Bender walks to Zapp and does the "up yours" hand signal.

"Oh, I see you are familiar with the Jackassian salute." He returns the salute.

"Idiot," Bender mumbles to himself as he walks by to join the others.

"Tell me, where is the voluptuous Captain Leela?"

"Oh, she and Fry should be down in a moment," responds the Professor.

Zapp stands looking up the ramp. He smiles as he sees Leela walk down. "Ahh, Lee-" he stops abruptly when he sees her arm wrapped around Fry's. "What is this?"

Leela smiles mischievously. "Zapp. You remember Fry don't you?"

"Fry? You mean this scrawny little hairball?"

"Nice to see you again too." Fry holds out his hand to shake Zapp's, but Zapp just sneers at him. Fry lowers his hand.

"Hmm, tell me Leela, what does this grease-head offer you that I don't?"

Leela's then thinks of a great comeback to tell Zapp off once and for all. "Well, for starters, he's nice, considerate, funny, thoughtful, understanding, a gentleman, he makes me happy, and he's a hell of a lot better in bed than you!" she shouts.

Everyone gasps, Fry blushes and scratches the back of head nervously.

"I know what the problem here is... " Zapp replies, "... you've missed me so much since our last encounter that you'll take anyone to fill the gap. Even a low life good-for-nothing like him." He forcefully grabs her arm and yanks her away from Fry.

She struggles to escape as he begins fondling her. Fry comes up and punches him in the face. Zapp falls to the ground, his nose bleeding badly. He looks up, frightened. Fry is standing with his fists still clinched and a harsh look about his face.

"Zapp Branigan, If you EVER lay a hand on her again, I'll give you much worse than a bloody nose!"

Zapp stands, he and Fry stare at each other for a moment. And without a word spoken, Zapp turns and walks back inside. Everyone is just in awe at this time, even Fry. He loosens his muscles and looks at his hand. Some of Zapp's blood got splattered on his knuckles. "W-what did I just do?"

Leela places a comforting hand on his shoulder. "You just proved to me that I'm safe with you." She takes a handkerchief from her purse and cleans the blood off his fingers.

Fry blushes in embarrassment over his behavior. "Thanks."

"Hey! Bonebags! You mind if we go inside now? I'm freezing my ass off here!" yells Bender.

Later... after dinner... everyone at the party is in the ballroom. It's a major gala event. Hundreds of people, robots, and aliens from all over the galaxy fill the room. The robot band begins playing a slow song, cueing everyone to dance. The gang is still sitting at the table. Upon hearing the music, Fry stands and holds out his hand charmingly to Leela.

"May I have this dance?"

"It would be my pleasure."

He takes her hand and leads her to the dance floor. They hold each other close as the music takes a more romantic tone.

"I didn't know you could dance, Fry."

"I've been practicing. Here, I'll show you."

He holds her left hand in his and gently places his right on her lower back. He slowly spins her behind his back and dips her backwards. He lifts her back up and the dance continues. After a few more minutes of dancing, they pull each other close. There are bright flashes as fireworks light up the sky which can be seen through the clear glass roof as the music fades. Fry and Leela admire the display. Neither of them notice Zapp approaching. He grabs Fry by the shoulder and smiles.

"Fry, may I see you for a moment in private, please?"

"Uh... sure."

"Good. Follow me."

Zapp leads Fry out of the ballroom and out onto the balcony, where no one else can see them.

"So, what's up?" asks Fry, in an attempt to lighten the mood.

"You know she doesn't really love you."

"What are you talking about?"

"I can tell she doesn't. I can see it in her eye."

"You don't know what you're saying."

"Oh, I do... I do. She has the same look that she gives me every time we meet. A look of pity, distrust, disgust, an empty almost dead-heart kind of look."

"You're wrong!"

Zapp turns, grabs Fry by the color of his coat and holds him up against the wall. "Now listen here you little punk! I can forgive you hitting me, but I'll be damned to see her with a runt like you! You've been the speed bump on the road to her heart to me. I'll see you two broken up in no time. I swear, If it's the last thing I do!" He throws Fry on the floor and marches back into the ballroom.

Fry sits there alone for the next several minutes, just staring up to the stars.

Leela, worried why Fry's been gone so long, looks for him. She sees him on the balcony. "Fry?"

He quickly turns and shoves his right hand into his pocket. "Leela?"

"What're you doing out here?"

"Oh, just thinking. You know, looking at the stars."

"Mind if I join you?"

He smiles. "I wouldn't have it any other way."

She leans against the arm rest next to him and joins in his star gazing.

"I used to do this all the time as a kid back in the 20th century. I would spend every night staring out my window till I fell asleep. Sometimes I'd even sneak onto the roof of the house on really clear nights. I remember I used to dream of what I'd be when I grew up. I always wanted to be an astronaut, of course my grades always held me back. But I didn't care. It's like I knew, deep down in my heart that one day... one day I would be a great space hero. But, I guess now I realize that it was all just my imagination running away with me."

"It's true though, you did become an astronaut; so to speak. Look, you get to fly through space all the time, get to hang out with aliens and robots, see other planets."

"Yeah, maybe, but I'm still no hero."

"No? What about that time you made up a TV episode to save the Earth from those couch potato Omicronians? Or the time you saved us from that giant garbage ball?"

"Yeah... I guess... "

"Or how about that time you saved me from marrying Alkazar? Or when you found out who my parents were? Or when you sat by my bedside for two weeks straight while I was in a coma, even when the doctor's gave me no chance of survival? You knew that I'd wake up if I heard a familiar voice."

"I prayed that it would get through."

She places her hand on his. "It got through, Fry. Trust me, you're the greatest hero I've ever known." She sees the sad expression on his face. "Is something wrong?"

"Let me ask you something; have you ever found out something that seemed obvious to everyone else?"

She thinks back to how obvious his love for her was to everyone else all these years before she finally realized it. "That happens to us all I suppose."

He smiles. "Thanks."

"Hey, what are friends for?" She looks out at the ice landscape and sees some penguins sliding across the ice into the water. A cold breeze blows, she shivers. Fry takes off his coat and rests it on her shoulders. "You've given me so much, Fry, but you're all I need."

"Well, I have something else to give you." He takes a small black box from his right pocket and kneels down on one knee in front of her. A look of shock overcomes her face, but is quickly replaced by ecstasy as she knows what he's about to ask. He opens the small box, revealing a golden ring with a small purple diamond. "I was up late last night trying to come up with the words to say, so here goes... Turanga Leela, my heart is a ship and your love is the fuel. And together we can go anywhere and back again. All I'm really trying to say is... will you marry me?" He removes the glove from her hand, takes the ring and slips it on her finger as he stands.

She starts to cry tears of joy and shouts, "YES!"

They come close to kiss but are halted by her starting to throw up over the side of the balcony. "Oh God! I'm so sorry Fry! It must be that stomach virus again!"

Fry's face is overtaken by a very serious look. "Leela, I don't think it's a stomach virus... I think it's... me... "

"What?"

"Maybe you're body's trying to tell you something. Like maybe this isn't right."

"Fry! Don't be ridiculous! I love you and I always will. But I think I really should go see the nurse. There should be a nurse's office nearby."

Fry helps her up and together, they find the nurse's office. The nurse takes Leela in and asks Fry to sit outside and wait. Fry sits nervously outside the door; praying that it is a stomach virus and not something else. He knows in his heart that they were meant to be. He just hoped that the feeling was mutual.

After what felt like an eternity, the door opens. The nurse steps out.

"You may see her now."

He runs in to see Leela sitting on the examination table, her face glowing with delight.

"Leela, are you okay?"

"I'm wonderful!" she hops onto the floor. "Fry, we're going to have a baby!"

Fry faints. Leela and the nurse run to his sides and lift him up on the table. Leela pinches his cheeks. "Fry? Come on, wake up."

His eyes open. He sees Leela over him and smiles. "Leela, I had the weirdest dream. You said you were pregnant."

She smiles tenderly and chuckles. His jaw drops. "You mean... ?"

She takes his hand and places his palm on her stomach. "Yes."

He stands and hugs her, both of them begin to cry. "I'm so happy!"

At that moment, on Planet Eternium... The elders are watching the events unfold on Pluto, and rejoicing. The orb image fades to an empty field of stars. They all gasp.

"What?" Where is it?!"

There is a bright flash outside and the whole planet shakes. The elders' temple breaks apart and crumbles. From the debris, the elders all stand and there they see the same nebula, floating high above them.

"NO!"

A bright stream of light beams across the ground from the nebula and burns down the remaining debris of the temple. Once the ruins are gone, the nebula suddenly flies away into space.

"Oh no! It's sensed them!"

"We have to warn them somehow!"

Back on Pluto... Fry and Leela have just made their announcements to the rest of the crew. They are all celebrating and congratulating.

"You know, I feel bad," comments Fry.

"Why's that?" asks Leela.

"Because, here it is X-Mas Eve, and I still haven't figured out what to get you."

Leela smiles and holds his hand. "But you've already given two great gifts."

"I did?"

"Yeah. And they were the best gifts I've ever gotten."

"Come to think of it, you gave me two great gifts too... my Secret Santa."

They share a tender kiss. Suddenly, there is a loud crash sound heard outside. A huge section of a wall breaks open as a small disc-like craft crashes through. The glass dome on top lifts and a small figure silhouetted by the smoke emerges. The smoke clears and reveals the creature to be

"Nibbler?" asks Leela quizzically.

Nibbler runs up to her and Fry. "You two have to come with me now!"

"You can talk?"

"No time to explain! Follow me!" He grabs her dress and his pant leg and starts leads them outside. The rest of the crew follow, as well as Zapp and Kiff. He takes them to the Planet Express ship.

"Hurry, inside!"

With the crew on board the ship takes off.

Once in space, Leela activates the autopilot. Everyone directs their attention to Nibbler, who is standing on top of the front console looking out the window, watching the stars intently.

Leela comes up to him. "What's going on here?"

"We need to increase our speed."

"Not until you start answering my questions."

"Very well, but I can't go into detail here. I must speak with you and Fry in private."
