Happy Birthday Futurama!
Posted on March 28, 2012 by Tim
What day is today?
It's Futurama's birthday!
What a day for a birthday,
Lets all have some cake!
{Fry} And you smell like one too!{/Fry}.
Yep, 1999 was a pretty big year, mostly because it was the last year before the Y2K bug ravaged society, leaving behind a barren, dystopian hell-scape with burning roads, rivers exploding, and calculators transforming into Scud missiles. But also because it featured the premiere of Futurama on this very date, March 28! So Happy Birthday to Futurama, and a bunch of great big Huzzahs and kudos to Frosty for {a} pointing this factoid out on FMMB, and {b} for letting me lift her post verbatim.

And to honor our favorite show's birthday let's have a look at a couple of fun things it inspired. Well, ok, maybe this first one isn't quite so "fun" in the traditional sense, but it was definitely inspired by it. It's the fourth installment in Dwayne Anderson's Fan Fiction Matters of Life And Death. This one is subtitled What's Wong With Me?, and I'll leave it to you dear reader to figure out who gets snuffed in this one. And I don't even have to give the usual warning about graphic death 'cause this one isn't particularly graphic.

And there's a couple of new Fan Arts from futuramafan47, one of Fry and one of Bender (and also one broken one 'cause it turns out that uploading a pic with a # in the file name breaks things. Hey, Leandro ... ).

And one last little amusing tidbit today, Rush found this on YouTube, which he says is “surprisingly Futurama related”.
That's not what the cocoa-butter is for!

Good News Everyone! We've got a two-fer today - some new pages to Pieter Antonissen's Fan Comic Four Better or For Worse AND a special preview page. Pieter's been having some connectivity issues lately but he managed to squeak enough bits through to send in two new pages to the comic, which start on page 52. He also sent this special bonus preview page that may fit into the comic at some future place and time.

And now we switch from fun in the sun to gory death with another installment in Dwayne Anderson's Matters of Life And Death series. This is part 3 and it's called Crush-tacean, and I'll bet you'll never guess from that title who gets offed in this one. Be forewarned though, this series contains graphic scenes of death by violence, so weak constitutions may want to go somewhere else instead.
One art please!

Hey, look at this, some Fan Art finally! It's been kind of a dry spell on the old artwork front lately, but now that over 'cause here, suitable for framing on your living room wall or computer desktop, is this very artsy pic of a Slurm Can drawn by futuramafan47.

That's gonna be a tough act to follow, but I've got just the thing to do it. But 'cause I'm mean, ornery, disagreeable, and also lazy, don't forget lazy, I'm not gonna put it up tonight. Instead, here's some Fan Fiction which is really more suitable for a Saturday night. First up is a new tale from Hailey Sands. It's called The Mad Doctor of Blood Planet and it relates how, after on a mysterious haunted jungle planet in search of fuel, an encounter with the natives leaves Fry, Leela, Bender, Hermes, and Amy lost. Fry meets an evil mad scientist and suddenly there's a lot of commotion going on about a lizard monster. Hmmmm. Coincidence? I think not.

And then Rush has a short one called Hair Drying which is a slightly different ending to I, Roommate.
This year Sadie Hawkins Day is on a Fryday

All right, many of us here in the United States and Canada are aware of Sadie Hawkins Day, but I wonder how many are aware of the ORIGINAL idea? It's not about a DANCE, but MATRIMONY was the outcome if the woman got her man and managed to drag him to the church! Now, what if some corrupt politician took the idea and ran with it... well, what you'd get would probably very much like dinkdrinker's new Fan Fiction called Sadie Hawkins Day, where in a certain cyclops mutant must get married or face a $50,000 tax penalty. If only she could find a man ... This fic takes the usual Fry and Leela ship and turns it upside down, and while it's a bit late for the actual date, whenever that is, it's pretty well nailed the political “process” here in the US of A.

Dinkdrinker is keeping really busy 'cause he also sent in two Comic Transcripts. These are #44 The Fry and the Furious in which Fry has to attend spaceship traffic school, only to get tangled up with Zapp Brannigan and, in the end, we learn more about the big bang than we ever wanted to know. And then there's #51 Fry Cook where Fry becomes the royal cook for Lrrr and NdNd on Omicron Persei 8.
Blood and guts

I've said before that it's always great when some long lost “old timer” returns to the fold, if only to just say hello. And by “old timer” I mean someone who was around before I was. Well, here's someone who really pushes the definition 'cause, as far as I can remember, the last time we heard from him was my very first update, and that was the better part of six years ago. Anyway, Dwayne Anderson returns with the first two parts of a new Fan Fiction. The stories are called Matters of Life And Death. These fics deal with death, about which Dwayne sez “Death is everywhere, even in the world of cartoons. Most cartoon characters try to avoid it, others can't get out of its way. Some are unlucky enough to get killed off permanently. As for the rest, the fact that they survive or are resurrected for another episode is a miracle. But let's face it, cartoons aren't real life.” So these fics deal with death, and before I link to them, a warning, in Dwayne's on words: The situations portrayed in this story are based on real deaths and are extremely graphic. And I'm talking gross, blood and guts, 1930's traffic accident reporting graphic. Yes, even more graphic than Leegola eating Zoidberg's hearts in Bender's Game. So you've been warned, and you'll be warned again before we're through. Which means that I've stalled long enough and now it's time to get the heart of the matter (literally); Part 1 is subtitled Jump N Bump in which Fry offs himself trying to impress Leela, and in Part 2 - Turang-Ouch! Leela gets it when she tries to recapture the lost glory of her Blernsball days and ends up in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Rermember, you read it here last!

News everyone! Probably old news by now but here it is anyway: CGEF and The Infosphere are reporting that the episode titles for Season 7A are known, along with teasers about a few of them. This should give us lots to speculate on between now and June.

And also, here's some new Fan Fiction from Rush
  • Happy Footcups wherein Fry and Bender argue about what they want to watch on TV,
  • Past Weird Happening which is about something really weird happened when Fry was born in a parallel universe,
  • Pride Breaking in which Fry has a bad dream into which an advertisement intrudes and hurts his pride
  • and U-J-Benders Are Everywhere which has Fry tries to convince his friends that Universe Jumping Benders are real but no one seems to believe him.

  • And one other little fun thing while I'm at it. Every Fan Fiction writer eventually ends up with a collection of story parts laying around. This is sort of like the mad scientist and his body parts, except without the smell of formaldehyde. These snippets are sometimes starts to stories that for whatever reason didn't go anywhere, or scenes that didn't get used, or whatever. Well, we now have a place to air that dirty laundry; There's a new thread on FMMB called Vignettes, which is a place for fan fic authors to share their unused material. There are several things there already and we hope it will keep growing, so check it out.
    Cobwebs, where?

Ok, so I admit, I haven't dusted this part of the Madhouse lately. I've been busy, and by busy I mean spending 5 days on the road attending F3WS in Washington D.C. which was very cool, except that in a boneheaded fit of forgetfulness I forgot to take any pictures. Beer was good though. So anyway, time to dust the place out and get back to bidness. And to that end, first up, some photos that Vytas_Wolf sent in. They're photos of little statues of Leela, Bender and Zoidberg. Now Vytas didn't say if he made the statues schlimself or not, and I probably shoulda put the pics in Fan's Photos, but it was late and I was tired and not really thinking so they're on his Fan Art page.

Next item - another Comic Transcript. Umbreon has cranked out #50 Your Mother Wears Pilot Boots, which is a Mom-centric story (as if the title didn't give that away).

And finally, a new Fan Fiction from Onuki called Saphire. In this one, the Professor needs some sapphire to power his new invention, so the crew run across the known universe to pick some up for him. Along the way, Bender gets hooked on the stuff and a little relationship trouble crops up. The usual word of caution about Onuki's stories applies - this is a Fry+author pairing.

OK, this might be the last update for a few days since I'll be heading out of town early Thursday, so let's get going. First up, a big Futurama-Madhouse welcome to first time contributor Tj Christie which sends three new bits o' Fan Art, two of Bender and one of Fry.

On the Fan Fiction side of things we've got a new one by Hailey Sands. It's called No Ostrich For Old Zoid, and it's all about what happens when Zoidberg finds a fine feathered friend, an ostrich. The others are suspicious of it, and rightfully so as it turns out because it seems that unusual pets are the order of the day. Could this be an evil plot, or is the ostrich really a fine feathered fiend?

And when I saw this Fan Art that Onuki sent in, I immediately assumed it was an illustration for the above fic. But no, it isn't, and I don't know the back story on it. All Onuki said was that “someone requested it”. So, someone, I hope you're watching 'cause here's your picture.
Thus passes the glory of fan fiction

It's another cold, snowy, crappy night here in my part of the world so it's a great time to sit down with one's pipe and slippers in front of a nice cheery fire and a nice glass of serial port and do a little light reading. And by reading, I of course mean Fan Fiction. But, before we get to that, how about a little snippet of fan fact? KurtPikachu2001 posted an item on FMMB revealing that in a test of a new electronic voting system, Bender was elected as the president of the Wasington DC school board. Turns out what happened is the developers of this fancy new electronic vote rigger dared the world to try to hack into it. Well, a team from University of Michigan did so, and they did it so well that they prevented anyone else from getting in, rigged it so Bender would win, and played the UofM fight song for 15 seconds. AND, they did it so well that ”it took two days before the authorities discovered they’d been pwned, and they were only alerted to that fact when another tester told them the system was secure, but that they should lose the annoying music on the sign-off screen.“. And you know what? That's exactly what Bender would have done.

Now, the afore mentioned Fan Fiction, two by two. The first two are by Rush. They are Killbots Vs Zombies which shows how Futurama would deal with a zombie apocalypse and A Ship Traveling In Dark Space that tells the story of a trip where Bender and Fry are asleep, leaving Leela alone with her thoughts, at least until she's interrupted.
The other two are from Onuki, starting with Rear Frydow where we find Fry confined to bed after accidentally breaking his leg while performing a concert, and at the same time trying to prevent Zapp Brannigan & drug dealers from robbing a jewelry store. Based on an idea by Hailey Sands. And lastly, the fic that inspired todays headline, Sic Transit Gloria wherein Shunsuke, Fry, Amy, Hermes, & Zoidberg get ill & are sent to a castle and Bender & Leela try to get the cure on a planet based on the violent Japanese manga & movie “The Neighbor No. Thirteen” with help from Roger & Klaus from ”American Dad“. This fic is based on an idea by Trenton Sands. Note that both of these fics, as many of Onuki's, feature Fry & the author in a relationship, so Fry fans and shippers, you've been warned.
