Futurama

What's your hurry?
Posted on March 31, 2010 by Tim
Suddenly I have an urge to get a two liter bottle of Shasta, put on some vinyl of a Canadian progressive rock band, and visit a small seaside town in Ireland. But since that would take effort maybe we'll just have some Fan Art from Rush. So he's sent in 5 more pics, 4 more of his “Bender is” series and one other of Bender having a smashing good time shooting bricks at some unknown target, which you'll note is a different kind of s'ing brinks than Bender usually does.

Rush also sent in a Fan Fiction in which his Universe Jumping Bender makes another appearance - literally Deus ex machina - creating a crazy twist to the end of Bender's Game. It's called Cornwood's Saviour. {Bubblegum Tate} Read it and weep. {/Bubblegum Tate}
Hats (and everything else) off to Futurama
Posted on March 30, 2010 by Tim
Oh man, if there was a section of the Madhouse that needed dusting with a flame thrower it was the Comic Reviews wing. That place hasn't seen any action in at least as long as Fry. I mean, it was at least 2BT (Before Tim) when that place was last updated. Of course, now a days we have a great site like Futuramics doing all of the hard work in that space so we can sit on our shiny metals and be lazy, which is what we like to do. But I'll bet even they don't have this one. You see, every once in a while some kind soul will take pity on us and throw us a bone and this morning we found this jammed in our mail slot - it purports to be the cover of the upcoming 50th Futurama comic which is due out in three or four months - just about the time the new seasons kick off actually. Coincidence? I think not. Anyway, supposedly it's an "All Nude Freedom Day Special".

And now on to the hats part. Although I'm not sure you'd call this a hat, but I'm not sure what else you'd call it either. So, for sake of argument, let's call it a hat until someone tells me otherwise. Anyway, this Zoidberg hat was made by deeph0ney. She doesn't sell them, but she has instructions on how to make your own over on her flickr page. You'll notice there's a little munged HTML on her Fan Photos page and clicking on the first pic takes you to her flickr page instead of to a bigger pic but not to worry, I'll roust out an admin sooner or later and get them to fix it. [Update: It should now work properly. I really need to make our upload scripts more webmaster-friendly. -Leandro]

Now this I know is a hat. I know that 'cause it's mine. That's right, mine mine mine mine mine! Hahaha. S-punk made it for me for last Xmas and I'm pretty sure you can figure out what Futurama character this one is.
Happy Fryday!
Posted on March 29, 2010 by Tim
Notice that's Fryday and not Friday. That would be silly 'cause it's really Monday, although I wish it was Friday again. No, this kind of Fryday is one that MissusPatches puts together where a bunch of artists collaborate on some random Futurama pics (see here for the gory details) and this is the latest (that's she's sent us anyway). What you're seeing there is only a little snippet of it - it's pretty big. She's got some other Fan Art too, so check 'em all out.

Speaking of MissusPatches, a few days ago we mentioned the FUTURAMA CHARACTER COUNTDOWN she was running on her DA page. Well Trevin Bernhard sent this one because “I noticed that no one seemed to make an Amazonian themed artwork on her deviant art page, so I decided to make one. I couldn't resist making an artwork of the Amazonians. It's two marines doing a sweep through the planet Amazonia and it looks like things aren't going to end well.” These black and white pencil sketches don't show up in the thumbnail size very well even when I enhance them to the point of grossly ugly, so be sure to check out the full size version on Trev's Fan Art page.
Analysis: Air dates, holiday episodes, FOX and more!
Posted on March 27, 2010 by Svip
As should be bleeding obvious to anyone these days, Futurama is returning 24 June 2010, if you were unaware of this fact, say having been living under a rock, well, you're in for some good news. Which you can read about elsewhere, since today we are going to discuss Futurama's airing on Comedy Central.

When Futurama was announced for a return in June 2009, Comedy Central was the initial signature on the contract with 20th Century Fox Television, a subsidiarity of the Fox Group, whom also owns Fox Network, but are not to be confused with one another. In a clause, in the contract, Comedy Central would allow a 'broadcast window' of a week for Fox Network to air a new episode before Comedy Central could air it, but only if Fox Network wanted to air the new seasons of Futurama. A decision they have not made yet.

In the initial description for the Comic-Con event of 2009 on the Futurama panel, a Fox executive was supposed to be appearing on the panel in what would probably been a staged event. But whether it was supposed to be announced that Futurama was returning to Fox Network remains unknown, because the whole ordeal was interrupted by 20th Century Fox Television's decision to open a casting call for the voices of Futurama in a contract scheme for the voice actors to settle for a smaller payment.

When asked whether Fox Network would be considering airing Futurama in September 2009, Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly replied that they were now looking into Comedy Central's success with the show, and would eventually make a decision after having it airing on Comedy Central for a bit.

It was recently announced that Futurama would be returning with new episodes, i.e. the sixth production season, on Comedy Central 24 June. But there were two important minor factors of this announcement, that few people paid attention to: A) the sixth production season will be split into 2 broadcast seasons (seventh and eight with 12 and 14 episodes, respectively) and B) Fox Network have decided not to air the seventh broadcast season.

With a length of 12 episodes and airing one episode per week (Comedy Central would seem an unlikely victim of being interrupted by sporting events or news), the seventh broadcast season would end somewhere in early September 2010.

But then a question will occur after having watched that 100th episode; 'when will we see more Futurama?'

And this is where it gets interesting. For starters, we know that the 101th episode will be a holiday or Xmas episode. Which would mean that the eight broadcast season is most likely to begin in late November or December. But of what year? If they were to wait for November/December, 2011, it would be a bad investment for both Comedy Central and 20th Century Fox Television, so the show will most likely return in December 2010.

So what does that mean? Well, it means we will have 3-4 months of no Futurama. A waiting period I consider... acceptable. But what will happen in that period? Well, the results from Futurama's airing on Comedy Central should now be in and thus Fox Network will probably make up their minds whether they want to see the show returning to their airwaves. But also more important, whether Futurama will return for a seventh production season.

New production seasons are usually ordered early in one season so they can be ready soon after the current season's episodes have been aired. And September 2010 will be the latest they can financially make such a decision.

In short; the future looks bright for Futurama, but I could be wrong.
Think Spring

That's what I've been trying to do lately. It was working too, until the thermometer took a nose dive in to the 'freeze my shiny metal off' region last night. And so while I'm sitting here trying to keep warm what appears in my in-box? How about a nice sunny beach scene? Not. No, it's Bender the Snowbot. MissusPatches sent the pic. She doesn't say if she made it but they've had lots of snow in her corner of the solar system this year. Check it out in the Fan's Photos section.

MissusPatches has also been busy with another little project. She's been doing a series of Futurama Robots Turned Meatbag pictures. She's got Calculon, Fanny (pictured), Malfunctioning Eddie, Roberto, and Tinny Tim.

Even more Fan Art - Rush stopped by with more pics in his “"Bender is” series.
We're only a little behind
Posted on March 25, 2010 by Tim
So according to that countdown up there we've only got 92 day to go until Rebirth! Ah, it's good to be a Futurama fan, and also a robot. To celebrate the re-return of our favorite show in the whole universe, MissusPatches has a grand scheme for a big community project. I'll just let her tell it from here:

”Beginning March 16, 2010, there were 100 Days left until the new season. As a Futurama fan, I wanted to find some way of celebrating this, so I present to you:

The FUTURAMA CHARACTER COUNTDOWN!

It is a community project in which we, the fans, countdown the last 100 days until the premiere of Futurama's new season on June 24th, 2010 through a series of 100 Character Prompts!

That's right, for the last 100 days leading up to Futurama there will be a Character assigned to each day for which fans can create writings/drawings/videos/cosplays/etc centering around. You are NOT required to do every prompt and late entries are accepted!

The project is being hosted at my journal on my deviantart account, so for more details as well as updates concerning the prompts, go there.

At the end of the project, I will be putting together a news article or two to showcase all of the work that the fan participants have done! We hope to involve a lot of fans and have tons of fun!!

Here are my entries for the first few prompts of the Character Countdown.”

So there you go. Have at it, and when you submit your creations to MissusPatches, send them to us too.
DRABBLES OF DOOOOOOOM.
Posted on March 24, 2010 by Tim
Tonights is going to be short and sweet 'cause I didn't get home until late and I thidg Ib comming down wib a code. So as a result we've only got one thing tonight even though there's plenty of stuff to keep me busy (never a dull moment here in the boiler room of the Madhouse ). Anyway, perhaps you recall a couple of odd AU pics done by Robots_Best_Friend that were promo pics for some unidentified AU work by Fruitosaurus? Well Good News Everybody, the unidentified is now identified. Fruitosaurus, also known as Leela+Fry, has appeared with a short work of Fan Fiction which is actually five drabbles. It's called A Series of Strange Events in which things are violently shaken up in an alternate universe. Just when things seemed normal...
pin ups and knock downs
Posted on March 22, 2010 by Tim
Whadaya gonna do - a guy sets out to make a pin up a day for a month series of pictures and then a flaky computer and the dreaded real life crap gets in the way. Fortunately, pin-ups also make great Fan Art so here's one little snippet that did get created. Kaspired did the pencil sketch of this pic of LeBarbara Conrad and his DA buddy Cookie_Lovey took that and produced the color version you see here.

People with Fry's hair color are called “Gingers”. Don't akx me why, they just are Ok? So let's just suppose that a re-run of a very old Stupid Ages TV show reminds the world of a fun little tradition known as Beat the Ginger Day, which just happens to be the title of a new Fan Fiction from Yubbles. And that's also the plot of the story - so needless to say Fry has to run for his life and hide out. And as you might guess, Bender buys into the "celebration" with gusto, deciding to extend it for a week. So when Leela get involved in helping hide Fry it turns out to be an exhausting week for everyone. fan art by The Futurama Point
Well, Zoidberg is cold blooded after all
Posted on March 21, 2010 by Tim
So what do all good Futurama fans do when it snows? They build Futurama inspired snow things, right? Right?? Of course they do. So where are all the pictures already? Here's one - Vytas_Wolf went out to frolic in the snow and rather than build your traditional snow person he decided to make a snow Zoidberg. The photo, which he took with his mobile phone, is in the Fan's Photos section.

Ok, in the back from the dead department, let's put tentacles and appendages together and welcome Go-a-Green-a with a new Fan Fiction. It's called Bloodlust and she says “I'm back from a bout with the deadly virus that plagues writers all over the world known as Writer's Block! My brain works better now. This is an explanation fic. I figured all the times they'd mentioned Bender stealing Fry's blood in the regular episodes deserved an explanation so... BAM! Here it is! (Part one anyway)”.

I really got a good chuckle out of this one - it's one of five new bits of Fan Art from Rush. Back on St. Patrick's day when he had his last batch of fan art I said “... there's a pot of gold on Rush's fan art page with lots more new pics too.”. Well, Rush took that and ran with it, so now I was literally correct retroactively.
Trailers, titles and lousy depth perception
Posted on March 20, 2010 by Tim
The promo trailer for the new season did indeed air the other night, so our informants were right. Here is is:

And over on PEEL Svip is reporting that by doing some clever digging at the US Copyright public catalog web site, he's located the titles to 12 over the new episodes (go to the site, type in 'Futurama' and then on the search results page select 'date (descending)' from the "Resort results by" drop down). The titles are A Clockwork Origin, Attack of the Killer App, Inspector #5, Rebirth, That Darn Katz!, The Duh-Vinci Code, The Late Philip J. Fry, and The Prisoner of Brenda.

Ok, so that's gonna be a tough act to follow, but here's just the two guys to do it. We've got two really neat bits of Fan Art and the first is this “pin-up” by Futurama_Freak1. He says that Marge Simpson was in playboy but that he thought that they could have done better, and if they did it'd be something like this. He says he used a new coloring technique to create a more realistic look using the airbrush tool.

And then there's this little number by El-Freako productions, which is the dynamic duo of El-Man and Futurama_Freak1. They had intended this for last Xmas, but they sort of “forgot” about it (how do you forget about something like this? ). And by the time they remembered it the Winter Olympics were over. But the Winter Paralympics are on and they figured that one eye and lack of dept perception is sort of a disability, so why not. Why not indeed.
Only 99 days to go!
Posted on March 18, 2010 by Tim
And, according to some of our high friends in low places, sometime tonight after 10:30 PM, probably US EDT, there is supposed to be a preview of the new Futurama season. I assume this is going to be on Comedy Central since they're the ones paying the bills. So if there really is, and if someone grabs it puts it on the Internet all before I turn into a pumpkin we'll link to it right here. Taking bets on what it might be - best guess I've heard is a dressed up color version of the animatic we saw last summer. Anyway, come 10:30 PM, our cracked team of sleuths will be combing the Internet looking for it.

Good News everyone, if I've gone scrounging for a frame grab of Cubert, it must be time for more poetry. Ha! Fooled you. Really, it's time for Cubert's Rants. Rantbuster extraordinaire Trevin Bernhard has come up with some more come uppance for the annoying little growth growth in 2ACV09.

And just to tidy things up here we've got some Fan Fiction. DSS embarks on the the final installment in the Terminator Mutant Quadrilogy. In Terminator Mutant Liberation, part 1, Fry has become the leader for the resistance trying to defeat the Mutant Machines. But there is a problem: the war itself is not the war Fry and Michelle were told about. They must save Bender Rodriguez (savior of Mrs.Fry) and find the heart of Spacenet. It's up to Fry, Michelle, Bender and a fellow Terminator Mutant, Layla Worthington, to find it and shut it down.
Faith and begorra!

It's Saint Patrick's Day so let's grab some green beer and start pounding it down like an Irishman. And speaking of Irishmen, we just happen to have one - it's Rush with some St. Pattie's Day Fan Art; It's Bender as a Shamrock. Somehow, I don't think that one would bring me luck. Anyway, there's a pot of gold on Rush's fan art page with lots more new pics too.

And in a completely different link, Rush also sent some Fan Fiction. This one's called Brick-O-Rama. It's Beast With A Billion Backs after a night of drinking yourself into an alternate universe.

Everyone probably already knows this, but a couple of hundred realities ago (April 18, 2004), Futurama creator Matt Groening appeared in an episode of The Simpsons called My Big Fat Geek Wedding. Well, Futurama_Freak1 captured that clip and now we've got it.

I'm sure many of us have encountered the good old 404 Page not found error while surfing the web. It's usually a sure sign that some sleepy webmaster somewhere screwed something up. I know I see it a lot whenever I'm uploading stuff and forget about Svip's caching mechanism. Well, rumor has it that many servers ago we had a neato picture of Leela kicking some 404 ass which has, alas, gotten sucked into some black hole somewhere along the way. So I happened to mention this to the aforementioned Futurama_Freak1 one night and look what showed up.
Up and Down and Up and down
Posted on March 15, 2010 by Tim
If you've tried to get onto Futurama Madhouse or FMMB in the last couple of days you probably thought we'd left the server room door open and Fry and Bender walked in and started messing around (I'm thinking they heard someone talking about pizza boxes and were looking for food). Anyway, our server has been having a few hicups lately, mostly it seems when Svip is sleeping. So, knowing that, we got him some No-Doze and a 2 liter of Coke so we should be good to go for a few days. Image by The Futurama Point.

So while the server is still up, let's get back to business. What's the best way to get more good stuff from your favorite artist? Simple, send them lots of money. However, when that isn't practical, another good (eg cheaper) method is to write them say “I like your stuff, please make more, like maybe a Futurama fan video of Avatar and Alien.”. Well, that's exactly what we've got here. Someone who shall remain nameless (but their initials are DSS) wrote to BackToTheFuturama and said just about exactly that, and so here is the Avatar vid. No word on when we might see the Alien one though.

Still with us? Ok, good. After a production hiatus of several months, Corvus has delivered the next chapter in his Fan Fiction The First Day. This fic flips the Futurama paradigm on it's head and, instead of Fry getting frozen and waking up in the 30th century, Leela somehow gets zapped back into the Stupid ages. In this chapter, she's dealing with the challenges of life in the year 2000, being Fry's roommate, and working as a pizza delivery girl at Panucci's Pizza. And, just like normal, Fry gets himself into trouble and it's Leela's lot in life to bail him out.

Comic book like image by Javier using FF1 artworkAnd now for something completely different, for you fans of Futurama_Freak1's recent Fan Comic The Surrogate Mutant who would like a nicely bound print edition for your collection, you're still out of luck, just not quite as much as you were before. You see, we now have a down-loadable Adobe PDF version. Just use this link and do whatever magic incantations your OS and Browser want to save the file.
"Sometimes I just don't know what the h-word I'm drawing"
Posted on March 11, 2010 by Tim
That's what Leela+Fry said when she sent this Fan Art. But hey, it's all good, 'cause sometimes I just don't know what the h-word I'm typing when I do these. But then, you probably already could tell that.

So that's it, just one Fan Art today. A measly 408,512 pixels for your mostly sorta daily Futurama fix (and it's actually fewer than that as a lot of them are white). And so, except for a couple of other tidbits and one ginormous fan video I haven't been able to tame yet, the old inbox is clear. Ahhh, finally, I can kick my feet up and relax for a while.
Looking Awesome
Posted on March 10, 2010 by Tim
Grab the paste and the brushes and the ladders 'cause we've got some awesome new Wallpapers from Futurama_Freak1. And Looking Awesome is just what this one's called. That's probably because Leela generally looks awesome no matter what she's doing. As for that hand gesture she's doing, I don't know - maybe she's telling Fry what she thinks of the size of his ... intelligence. Yeah, that's it. Anyway, I'm pretty sure no one will have any trouble figuring out the gesture in the other one.

It's been at least a week, or maybe a month, but whichever it's time for some more Cubert's Rants! Bosda is back with some more snappy answers for the annoying little clone in 2ACV09 and one in some unexplored territory, Futurama's Scientific Achievements.
Time lurches backwards, and maybe a little sideways
Posted on March 8, 2010 by Tim
Got a couple of new Fan Arts here from Vytas_Wolf. This a one's called Fryatar (can't imagine what that's supposed to be about ) and the other one is a sketch of Fry confronting his inner angels and devils. And I can't imagine he's got very many of those.

Now about that time lurch, no, we're not re-enacting Bender's Big Score. If you've been following that countdown we've been running ticking off the days until the new season premiers, it's taken a two week skip backwards. And that's because news has reached us that, according to HitFix, the official date and time is now June 24, 2010 at 10:00 PM*. The upside to this is that I get a second chance to make a big whoopie over 100 days which I missed out on with the original date because something special was going on that day. The down side is I just realized that on that date I will be somewhere where there is no TV or Internet access. Ah well. Thanks and a tip of the tin foil hat to Svip and SoylentOrange for the heads up.
* none of the articles indicate what time zone that 10 PM refers too but generally here in the US of A show times are Eastern (UTC-4) unless otherwise noted.
SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY!
Posted on March 7, 2010 by Tim
Ok, I don't know if anyone outside of North America has heard those schmaltzy commercials, complete with echo, advertising some event that could be anything from a car race to a Freedom Day sale: “SUNDAY! SUNDAY! SUNDAY!” - if you're lucky, you haven't. Anyway, kaspired used it to announce his latest Fan Art because this pic is part of a week's worth of pin-up a day pictures he did, and this is Sunday's - and it doesn't look like it's going to be a day of rest. He also sent the practice layout for it along with Saturday's pic (which isn't Futurama related, except that it has purple hair). You can see the whole schmatlz on his DA page.

It's a night for three threes - three SUNDAY!s and three fan arts from two different artists (and it also took me three tries to spell 'artists' correctly - but then that's after (not to be confused with The Three Bears - completely different story)). Anyway, two of the pics that Rush sent in (one pictured here) are related - this one's called The Servant of Morbend and the other is The Cross of Morbend. I can't say any more about them 'cause Rush said “no spoilers or I'll send Universe Jumping Bender to pop in from an alternate universe to throw a brick at you.” OH! Look at this, he also goes on to say “I'm just joking here, but don't tell them that”. Ooopsey!
Oh man, my head!
Posted on March 4, 2010 by Tim
Here's a hint, next time an Aussie offers to take you drinking, go easy on the Fosters. That stuff will kick your butt. Or maybe I'm a lightweight. So anyway, I finally woke up and found my keys on the kitchen counter next to the rat poison, and also these two pieces of Fan Art. At least, I thought there were two pieces, but then my double vision cleared, although I still wasn't sure 'cause Leela's hair was the wrong color. Finally I figured out that this new pic from Robot's_Best_Friend is another pic like the last one he did - a “promo” for some mysterious AU work of Fruitosaurus' that is yet to be revealed.

Ok, be careful where you step over here, because we've got something really unusual - Crap Art. I really had to dust and fumigate this wing of the Madhouse 'cause I haven't been in here in quite a while. But now we've got two new pics from Copper and so I put the crappier one up ('cause he said to put them in Crap Art and the rules say I've got to use the crappiest pic). The other one, of the Terminender, is actually pretty good. Huzzahs and Kudos for Copper!
What you are now reading is normal. Do not adjust your ISPs.

Tim, the regular guy has handed me the keys to the Madhouse after some “persuasion” so I myself can bring you the by-product of over half a year of eating donuts, drinking coke and playing videogames. Prepare yourself, the reign of comics about altered sexual prefrences is at an end as I bring you The Surrogate Mutant with 25 hearty pages of story and 10 bonus pages of extra juicy comic-like content. So grab your reading glasses, a bowl of bachelor chow, head out to the comics page and get ready to read the greatest story ever conceived!*
*Note: This is not egotistical boasting but rather a tasty pun on one of the comic’s themes.
